Michael Savett is a long-time supporter of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) and a tireless advocate for gluten-free needs. His blog, Gluten Free Philly, is the leading source of information on gluten-free products, restaurants and events in the Philadelphia area.
Michael began volunteering for NFCA in 2004 after his older son, Aden, was diagnosed with celiac disease. At that time, gluten-free food was harder to come by, and restaurants rarely identified which menu items were gluten-free.
“We used to keep a loose-leaf binder full of menus faxed to us or printed from websites and bring it when we ate out because often the restaurants themselves didn't have the information,” Michael recalls.
Over the years, Michael gained extensive knowledge of gluten-free options in the Philadelphia region, and in 2009, he decided to share it. Michael launched Gluten Free Philly as an online resource that catalogued local gluten-free information in one place. It began with restaurant listings, but soon grew into an all-around hub, with product news, restaurant reviews, event listings and more.
Michael has an active presence on Facebook and Twitter, with a strong following in the Delaware Valley and beyond. He has spoken at local support group meetings and has coordinated several fundraising dinners for NFCA. He has built relationships with top chefs in the area and has become a voice for gluten-free needs on the dining scene.
In 2011, Michael joined NFCA’s Business Advisory Board, where he offers personal and professional insight on a variety of initiatives. That same year, he won the 2011 Reader's Choice Award from CBS Philadelphia's Most Valuable Blogger contest in the Health, Fitness and Medical category.
Michael is an attorney practicing insurance law, a devoted husband and father of two, and an avid Phillies fan.
The NFCA Team is thrilled to honor Michael at Appetite for Awareness 2012.
