Celebrity Chef's Restaurant Fined after Serving Gluten to a Customer with Celiac Disease


Chef Jamie Oliver, British restaurateur and media personality, is at the center of a story reported on the Huffington Post.  His restaurant, Jamie’s Italian in Portsmouth, England, is being fined $12,000 after a customer with celiac disease ordered gluten-free pasta and was given traditional, gluten-containing pasta instead. 

Original reports from The Telegraph say the 38-year-old woman experienced severe nausea and vomiting after eating the pasta.  Jamie’s Italian pleaded guilty to “selling food not of the nature, substance or quality demanded by the purchaser,” and agreed to pay the fine. 

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) encourages restaurants serving gluten-free options on their menu to enroll in the Gluten-Free Resources Education and Awareness Training (GREAT) Kitchens course.  GREAT Kitchens is an accredited, online program focused on teaching safe gluten-free food preparation to all restaurant employees, from servers to chefs.
