Getting Glutened: June 5, 2014 Newsletter
Hi, I’m Alice Bast, President and CEO of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness. And I want to talk to you about two subjects. One is getting glutened and the second one is how the gluten-free diet is not enough. So when I go out to eat, and I’ve been on a strict gluten-free diet for 21 years, I actually still run the risk of getting cross-contact and I have, I have unfortunately gotten really sick. So I thought I’d share some of those symptoms with you. I’ve had neurologic problems, burning on my skin, migraine headaches, terrible diarrhea, and I’m sick for 3 days, you know, foggy brain and it’s frustrating. And I know you’re frustrated too, because we hear from you on Facebook that cross-contact is your #1 concern. Well, it’s more than a concern these days because according to recent studies, unfortunately 65% of us, and this really, really gets to me, 65% of us are not having intestinal healing. You know, my mom died of undiagnosed celiac disease, she died of cancer. And I want to stay healthy, I want to stay well and that’s why we have our Research Opt In and we want to talk to you about how you can live life to the fullest because there are therapeutic options that are down the road and we’re really hopeful and we want to give you hope as well. We want you to eat without fear.
