GLUTEN-FREE COOKING SPREE COMES TO NEW YORK CITY
National Foundation for Celiac Awareness and CNN Newsroom Anchor Heidi Collins host Gluten-Free Cooking Spree with top chefs and New York City-area doctors

New York City – February 20, 2007 – Prominent chefs and doctors will take over the kitchens at the Institute for Culinary Education on Friday March 2, 2007, to compete in the creation of unique gluten-free meals in an effort to raise awareness of celiac disease.  The competition will be hosted by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) and moderated by CNN Newsroom Anchor Heidi Collins, a fellow celiac disease sufferer and the NFCA spokeswoman.

Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food.  Celiac sufferers can maintain a normal lifestyle by following a gluten-free diet, which means excluding wheat, barley and rye.

NFCA will pair seven prominent New York chefs with seven New York doctors for the competition into teams of two.  The judges for the event will be a food critic, Dr. Peter Green (Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center), and Riley Collins (Heidi’s five-year-old son).  Instead of a cash prize awarded to the winning team, a donation will also be made to the Columbia University Celiac Disease Center to support the work of Dr. Peter Green.

The participating chefs include: BR Guest Corporate Executive Chef Brett Reichler, Chef Ralph Pagano Iron Chef and Hell’s Kitchen, Chef Jehangir Mehta-Partistry & Graffiti, Chef Julian Medina, Chef Aarón Sanchez—Centrico & Paladar, Chef Carrie Levin—Good Enough to Eat, and Chef Patricia Williams—District Restaurant.

The participating doctors include: Dr. Peter Green as a judge from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, Dr. Suzanne Loiselle-Mt. Sinai Hospital. Dr. Michael Blechman-Beth Israel Medical Center, Dr. Marc Wager-Sound Shore Medical Center, Dr. Michael Contillo-Lawrence Hospital, Dr. Zoovia Hamid-Sound Shore Medical Center, Dr. Rafael Soltren-Phelps Memorial Hospital, Dr. Robert Mangione-St. Johns University, and Maureen Higgens, R.N.—Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The gluten-free cooking spree event is open to the general public and tickets are available through the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness website: www.celiaccentral.org. Cost of attendance is $50 and includes dinner, dessert, wine and beer (all food items will be gluten-free). VIP tickets are available for $75 and include admission for a meet and greet with doctors and chefs before the event.

Event sponsors include: Bob’s Red Mill, CNN, Anheuser-Busch, Gluten-Free Passport, Whole Foods Market, Quest Diagnostics, TH Foods, New York State Restaurant Association, Bistango Restaurant, Foods by George, Baby Cakes NYC, Gluten-Free Pantry, INA Garden, Anza Gluten-Free, Arbonne, and Bumble Bar.
