Patients diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may actually be suffering from celiac disease, a new study has confirmed. Researchers selected 100 patients fulfilling criteria for IBS and screened them for celiac disease. Of the 100, two patients were diagnosed with celiac disease and symptoms were found to improve on a gluten-free diet.

Patients were screened using a celiac disease stick test. Diagnosis proceeded with blood testing for antibodies and confirmed through endoscopic duodenal biopsy.

The symptoms of IBS and celiac disease are similar, which can lead to misdiagnosis. Previous research has advised that those with IBS get screened for celiac disease, and this study provides additional evidence.
