My name is Alison and I was diagnosed January 3, 2006. Since my
mid-twenties I have been told I was anemic. The reason was always that
I had heavy menstrual cycles. When I claimed that I was tired a great
deal of the time, I was informed if I lost weight and exercised this
would cease to be a problem. I finally lost 54 pounds, but the energy
level did not increase. The only thing the doctor would say is that I
needed to lose more weight. No matter which doctor I saw the answer
was the same.
In my late 30’s and 3 doctors later, I was unable to get pregnant. My husband & I went to Dorothy Mitchel-Leef who realized I had other problems besides not being able to get pregnant. I told her I felt something was wrong, but my doctor did not seem to be listening. She sent me to Dr. Maxa at Northside Hospital who discussed my additional problems of bloating & gas that had become worse over the years. He then sent me to Metro Gastrological Group & Dr. Kelly Carson at St. Joseph Hospital. She ran tests and did a biopsy on January 3rd. This became the culmination of a long journey and the beginning of another. Dr. Carson put me in touch with Markee who headed up one of the CELIAC Support Groups in Georgia. I have attended meetings, spoke with other patients, read everything on the Internet and attended the convention in New York. All of which have been invaluable in my quest to enhance my life. I began to feel better within the first 6 weeks of removing gluten from my diet. My follow-up in October showed that there is an improvement in my vitamin deficiencies. I am indebted to the individuals that have helped me thus far. |
