How Common Is Celiac Disease?

Sandy's Story

I just confirmed that I have celiac disease with a simple blood test I requested my family doctor take. My family doctor "was sure I did not have CD, but he would do the blood test to put my mind as ease".

To the best of my knowledge, I have lived with CD for 20+ years, looking back now at the symptoms I have had over the years. The last 6 months have been horrible, I was going to the bathroom 10-12 times a day and I am tired all the time. I started watching what I was eating, first was dairy products for a month, no change in any of my symptoms.

Then I saw something on TV about CD, so I starting tracking my gluten intake and within a week I knew that I had CD. I just had my biopsy today to further confirm I have CD. I am looking forward to getting started on the diet and look forward to feeling better. Not that I am glad to have CD, but relieved that it is manageable by diet and it will not take pills to control. It will be a healthier diet than what I was use to eating and my husband and children are very supportive! I look forward to having energy again and not spending my meals in the restroom.
