With awareness of gluten-related conditions on the rise, more athletes are discovering that they have celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity and adopting the gluten-free diet.  At this year’s Wimbledon, tennis stars Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Sabine Lisicki were a few of those gluten-free athletes.

The players have all reported improvement in their performances after discovering their gluten-related disorders.  Although the gluten-free diet shouldn’t be seen by athletes as a go-to diet for enhancing performance, these players are experiencing improvement because of the effect food intolerances and digestive disorders can have on athletic performance.

Undiagnosed celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity can significantly affect athletic performance on many levels.  Once identified and corrected, athletes begin to feel better and often play their best.  Djokovic specifically credited the gluten-free diet for his success and improved performance on the court last year.
