Olympic Runner Shares Her Celiac Disease Story

Runner Amy Yoder Begley coped with undiagnosed celiac disease for 10 years, but that didn’t stop her from striving to be part of the US Olympic Track and Field Team.  After dealing with severe bloating, gas and diarrhea, Begley took action and began to pursue the root cause of her symptoms once again.  It was in 2006 that Begley learned she had celiac disease, along with osteopenia and hypothyroidism.  She adopted the gluten-free diet and reached her goal of becoming part of the US Olympic team in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. 

Now, Begley is a running coach, but is working to raise celiac disease awareness.  In a Q&A session with Competitor writer Allison Pattillo, Begley shares her experience with celiac disease and the ins and outs of living as a gluten-free athlete.
