Dr. Schar USA has officially opened its first U.S.-based production facility – a 60,000 square foot bakery dedicated to manufacturing gluten-free products. To celebrate, the company hosted a grand opening on June 21, 2012, featuring a ribbon cutting ceremony and a special appearance by actress Jennifer Esposito.

The new facility will produce a variety of Schar’s gluten-free baked goods, which have already gained popularity on store shelves. Previously, these items had been manufactured in Italy and the United Kingdom, but the new facility now brings production stateside.

Esposito, who currently stars in the CBS drama “Blue Bloods,” made a brief speech at the event, noting the value of having a gluten-free facility in the U.S. Esposito was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2009 and recently founded the organization Jennifer’s Way to drive awareness about celiac disease and gluten-free needs. Schar presented her with a $2,500 check to support this mission. [Note: A previous post on beyondceliac.org had incorrectly stated that Esposito had partnered with Schar.]

The grand opening gathered a number of celiac and gluten-free advocates, including NFCA Founder and President Alice Bast, NFCA Healthcare Relations Manager Kristin Voorhees and Gluten-Free Philly blogger Michael Savett.
