Update! Read more to find out how many people were diagnosed due to the science fair project.

Grace Rennard, an amazing 8-year-old student at Trailside Elementary School in Anchorage, Alaska, is focusing on celiac disease for her school’s science fair. Grace has celiac disease and is passionate about raising awareness of this disease and its impact.

In addition to distributing information provided by the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA), Grace has arranged to have free celiac disease screening for 133 people in March.

This free screening, a simple blood test, could be very helpful for people who have co-pays or insurance difficulties but would like to be tested. The tests are being offered on a walk-in basis at My Health Clinic in Anchorage beginning on March 5th until all 133 are completed. The test kits are provided through the generosity of Fischer Scientifics’ Phadia Immunology Reference Laboratory.

Grace hopes to have the test results back for the science fair on March 21st. Individuals who test positive will be contacted by the medical provider at My Health Clinic. All test results are confidential. Grace will only be getting the overall number of those who test positive. Her hope is that by reaching out and creating awareness of the symptoms, those who test positive will be put on the path to treatment and a healthy life.

All those interested in being tested can go to My Health Clinic (907-248-2482) at 2105 E 88th Avenue, Anchorage. Walk in anytime starting March 5th from 8am – 7pm, Monday through Friday or 8am – 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Update!Through Grace’s science fair project, four people received positive blood test results for celiac disease. NFCA applauds Grace and her efforts raise celiac disease awareness and increase diagnoses. Amazing job, Grace!
