Jennifer Esposito, Dr. Fasano Lead Celiac Disease Segment on “Fox Files”

After being placed on a leave of absence from the CBS hit “Blue Bloods,” actress Jennifer Esposito tells Fox what happened behind the scenes.

Last month, actress Jennifer Esposito bashed CBS for placing her on a leave of absence from her role as Jackie Curatola on the police drama “Blue Bloods.” In the November 19th episode of “Fox Files,” Esposito opened up to host Arthel Neville about celiac disease and how it played a role in her suspension from the CBS hit.

Esposito reported that her doctor placed her on a reduced work schedule due to celiac disease, but CBS placed her on an unpaid leave of absence because she was not able to fill the demands of her role. Still angry over the suspension, Esposito told Neville she is having difficulties finding a new job since she is still under contract with CBS.

Alessio Fasano, MD, Medical Director for the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland, also appeared on “Fox Files” to provide his expert opinion on celiac disease. Dr. Fasano, a member of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness’ (NFCA) Scientific/Medical Advisory Council, explained the autoimmune disease and the damaging effects gluten can cause for a person living with celiac.

Also featured on the show was Mickey Redmond, former professional hockey player for the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings. Redmond is diagnosed with celiac disease and also weighed in on the issue of celiac disease and its underdiagnosis.

While much of the segment focused on Jennifer Esposito’s struggle with CBS, the episode presented a number of facts about the autoimmune condition and its many symptoms. Esposito also explained that celiac often goes far beyond gastrointestinal discomfort and can present with unexpected symptoms such as headaches, severe fatigue and anxiety.
