Huffington Post Live Asks: “Gluten-Free: Healthy or Trendy?”

NFCA President Alice Bast explains the gluten-free diet is the only option for people with celiac disease.

Interest in the gluten-free diet skyrocketed over the last few years, fueled by celebrities and athletes touting the perceived benefits of eliminating the protein from their diets. National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) President Alice Bast joined the Huffington Post Live to explain why the gluten-free diet isn’t a trend for people living with gluten-related disorders, nor is it a way to lose weight.

In addition to Alice, special guests on the segment included registered dietitian Nancy Patin Falini, Kiera Butler, Senior Editor at Mother Jones and Tricia Ryan, Principal and Director at The Gluten-Free Agency. Together, the guests focused on the difference between celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (‘gluten sensitivity’), the importance of getting tested and the potential long term consequences of living with undiagnosed celiac disease.

Thanks to the Huffington Post Live for giving Alice the opportunity to clear up common misconceptions about the purpose of the gluten-free diet!
