TV Personality Katie Couric Talks Celiac and the Gluten-Free Diet with Leading Medical Expert

Dr. Peter Green of Columbia University explains the facts about celiac disease and debunks the myth of the gluten-free diet for weight loss.

There’s no doubt that more gluten-free options are lining grocery store shelves and making their way onto restaurant menus across the country. Noticing the trend, TV journalist Katie Couric sat down with Dr. Peter Green, a leading celiac disease expert from Columbia University, to discuss the reason for the increase.

In a short video on her Yahoo! blog, Katie’s Take, Couric asked Dr. Green about gluten and how it affects people living with celiac disease. Dr. Green noted the majority of people living with the autoimmune condition don’t know they have it. When asked about using the gluten-free diet as a weight loss method, Dr. Green explained that a gluten-free diet is not necessarily a healthy one, as it is typically low in fiber and high in carbohydrates. He added that adopting a gluten-free diet is as much about knowing what not to eat as it is about knowing which options to choose for maximum health.
