More About the 'Should You Be Gluten-Free?' Panel Presenters

alice bastAlice Bast
Alice Bast founded the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) in 2003. Her personal experience with celiac ignited her passion to help the estimated three million Americans suffering from the disease receive a prompt and accurate diagnosis.

Alice is widely regarded as a celiac expert and has been a keynote speaker at many national medical and food industry events. She was a featured presenter at the Healthy Foods Conference in Boston (2008), Natural Products Expo East show (2008, 2009), and keynote speaker at medical conferences hosted by St. Barnabas Health Care System (2009), The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (2009), and American Pharmacists Association (APhA) (2010). Alice will also be speaking at the 2011 Natural Products Expo West and Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Wellness Conference.

Her story has been featured in Good Housekeeping Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, and on nationally televised programs such as ABC’s ‘The View’ and CNN. Among her recent accomplishments, Alice co-authored an article titled “Celiac Disease and Reproductive Health Issues”, which was published in Journal of Practical Gastroenterology (October 2009). In conjunction, she was also featured in one of their MDTV segments.

Her organization, NFCA, drives diagnosis of celiac disease, improves quality- of-life for children and families adhering to a gluten-free diet and advances science by facilitating collaborations within the healthcare community. NFCA is a leading resource for celiac information. NFCA’s website offers free, comprehensive information and support materials for celiac patients, their families and health care providers, accredited training for healthcare and food industry professionals.

Jill Brack
Film and entertainment industry executive turned real estate developer, Jill Brack rarely spent time in the kitchen.  That changed in 2004 when she and her daughter Stella were diagnosed with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the intestines become damaged by eating gluten.  Jill began baking gluten free cookies that she and her daughter could enjoy by replacing traditional wheat flour with nutrient dense garbanzo bean and coconut flour.  Soon friends and family who weren’t restricted to a gluten free diet began asking for more and in 2008 Glow Gluten Free was born. 

Glow Gluten Free bakes four flavors of gluten free and dairy free cookies with natural and organic ingredients in a certified gluten free and kosher bakery. The brand is popular with both conventional and gluten free cookie connoisseurs and has been singled out in Real Simple, Everyday with Rachael Ray and New York Magazines.  Glow Gluten Free cookies are currently sold at specialty, gourmet and health food stores and Whole Food Markets.

Jill has been honored by The Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University for her work in advocating for celiac awareness, and has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show talking about celiac disease and her gluten free cookies.  She serves on the Board of Directors of Harvest Home Farmers Markets, which provides local fresh produce to low income neighborhoods in NYC and The Wellmet Group which supports emerging and grassroots social service organizations in NYC.  Jill is a graduate of The American University in Washington DC and The Institute of Integrative Nutrition and lives in NYC with her husband and daughter.
 

Jill ShahJill Shah
Jill Shah is the founder and CEO of Jill’s List (www.jillslist.com,) the trusted source for information about practitioners of Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM.)  Launched in January 2011, Jill’s List helps practitioners connect with new patients and with hospitals who are looking to expand their network of CAM practitioner relationships. 

Prior to starting Jill’s List, Jill co-founded SoLUXE, a network marketing retailer of fine stationery and gifts.  Before SoLUXE, Jill spent the previous fifteen years building and selling both product and services companies in the Internet and Technology markets.  In 2002 she was recruited to join the executive team at Mercator, Inc., a publicly traded software company, as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Global Alliances. 

Prior to Mercator, Jill was a Vice President in The Monitor Group’s Investment Banking Practice – Monitor Advisory for Strategic Transaction.  She was one of the founding members of RxCentric, an online PDR which served physicians and before that she was a Global Client Partner at iXL, Inc. a roll-up of several IT services and Internet marketing firms across the company which was taken public in 2000. 

Jill holds a BA from Providence College.  After school, Jill moved to Japan to teach English in Tanabe, Japan, where she lived, studied ceramics and worked for two years.  She currently serves on the Boards of a few start-up ventures and also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Friends of Titus Sparrow Park and the Board of Trustees for The Kingsley Montessori School.  She is a Council and Development Committee member at Hill House in Boston and currently lives in Boston with her husband, Niraj, and their two children.
