Sherrie's Story

I first began getting sick in 2000. To make a long story short, after eating something that contained gluten I would immediately start having pains, but I was unaware of the cause.

Sometimes the pain was so severe I can only equate it to childbirth. It was so bad that my rectum would "draw up" like a charlie horse! My stomach would bloat like I was 9 months pregnant, and unlike a lot of other stories I've read, instead of having diarrhea, my bowels would actually stop. I would go almost a week without having to use the bathroom.

Not having health insurance, I was forced to go to local clinics. At first, the nurse practitioner (NP) would do blood work and a pap smear, which showed increased white blood cells and prompted treatment with antibiotics. I went to the clinic so often that the NP told me the clinic couldn't see me anymore; I needed to be seen by a doctor.

I called the local health department and got an appointment, but they gave the same treatment I had already been receiving. Pap smears, blood work, white blood cells, shot in the buttocks and a bottle of antibiotics to go. Again, I was told to see a doctor. I made an appointment with my OB/GYN. I saw him for little over a year, with little change in my treatment.

Finally, my friend suggested I see a natural health specialist. By this time, my weight was down to 118 lbs. and I wore a size 0-3. I went in sick as a dog on July 14, 2007. Through tears, I told her everything. She promised that we would find out what the problem was and ordered extensive blood work. She asked me to keep a food journal and suggested several alternative medicines.

Within the first week of feeling no pain, I made and ate some homemade peanut butter cookies, and the pain came back! I called her to tell her what was going on and insisted that I knew I could eat peanut butter, butter and vanilla. She said “It’s gluten!” She gave me a quick explanation and told me to go online and find out everything I could about celiac disease, gluten and how to avoid it.

It’s now more than 3 years later. I've had my ups and downs, but for the most part I'm much much better, and my weight is up to about 130 lbs. The only problems I have now is very bad bloating. For this, I take Betaine HCl Pepsin. I hope my story helps somebody! God bless!

You know the problem. Now be the solution.
