Cassandra's Story

8/31/2011

I was sick for 4 months at a time. I went to the hospital all the time for my upset stomach and not being able to keep anything down.

The doctors at the hospital said it was possible I had gastritis, an early stomach ulcer, or irritable bowel syndrome. They treated me for gastritis first, but the medicine didn't help. They took blood every time I went to the hospital, and every time they said my blood work came back normal.

The doctors finally sent me to a surgeon. I told him my symptoms, and he took blood to look for something. He said my electrolytes were good, but the blood test came back positive for celiac disease. I went for a scope test, and that confirmed I had celiac disease.

The diet is extremely hard since I love pizza and it's hard to not eat it. It's also hard finding foods in the stores around my town because they don't sell very many gluten-free products. Despite that, the diet has changed my life and my family's life.
