Ambler, PA (April 25th, 2011) -The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) is excited to announce that Jill's List (www.jillslist.com), a web-based healthcare community for patients and practitioners with a special focus on comprehensive medicine, will host an interactive online event on the topics of celiac disease and the gluten-free diet.

“Should You Be Gluten-Free” will take place Wednesday, May 11th 2011 from 1-2pm EST.

Join expert panelists Mark Hyman, MD, New York Times Best Selling Author and family physician; NFCA Founder and President, Alice Bast; and Jill Brack, Founder of GLOW Gluten-Free Cookies for a live presentation and audience Q&A, moderated by Jill’s List CEO and Founder, Jill Shah.

Approximately 21 million Americans suffer from celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, conditions that can only be treated with a lifelong 100% gluten-free diet. This one of a kind event aims to educate both healthcare providers and patients alike, covering topics such as who really needs the gluten-free diet, how to recognize celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, what resources are available and more!

Patient Perspective Topics Include:

  • The Gluten-Free Diet: What is it and who should consider it?
  • Separating Myth vs. Fact: What’s the gluten-free buzz all about?
  • Communicating With Your Doctor: Can I insist on a test? Is it covered by insurance? Should my family be tested?
  • Life After Gluten: What patient resources and community support are available?

Practitioner Perspective Topics Include:

  • Signs & Symptoms: When should I suspect that gluten is an issue?
  • Diagnosing Celiac Disease & Gluten Sensitivity: What tests can I rely on to identify undiagnosed patients?
  • Best Practices, Treatments, & Patient Support: What does the gluten-free patient need?
  • Continuing Education For Practitioners: Yes, FREE CME is available!

Mark Hyman said, “Given the number of people who are potentially undiagnosed and suffering from gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, it is critical that practitioners learn how to identify, treat and diagnose these conditions. Additionally, I encourage patients to confidently discuss any concerns they have if they think that they might be suffering from gluten sensitivities.”
