Appetite for Awareness Returns To Philadelphia October 24th

Ambler, PA (September 13th, 2010) – The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA), along with Thomas Jefferson University and Hospitals will hold the Appetite for Awareness: a Gluten-Free Cooking Spree (A4A) on Sunday, October 24th, 2010 at the Philadelphia Cruise Terminal at Pier One at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

A4A is the nation’s most prestigious gluten-free event dedicated to raising further awareness of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder affecting 1 in 133 Americans. The event teams top chefs and doctors from all over the Philadelphia and tri-state region together for a cooking competition to create the best gluten-free dish.

As NFCA’s signature event, A4A welcomes over 1,500 people from across the nation each year and raises money in support of NFCA’s national celiac disease awareness campaign and education initiatives.

Guests who attend the event enjoy sampling a variety of gluten-free creations from over 35 of the area’s premier restaurants, an open bar that includes gluten-free beer and wine, and an active marketplace showcasing products from more than 85 the nation’s finest gluten-free vendors.

Participating restaurants in this year’s event include: Amis, Broad Axe Tavern, Buddakan, Butcher & Singer, Casona, Chifa, Flemming Steakhouse, Giorgio’s on Pine, Le Castagne, L Oca Bistro, Osteria, Palm Restaurant, Pasta Pomodoro, Rouge, Vetri, Zahav –and many more!

In conjunction with Appetite for Awareness, all participating restaurants receive training in the latest gluten-free kitchen protocol through NFCA’s Gluten-Free Resource Education and Awareness Training (GREAT) Program. Together, NFCA and these participating dining establishments will contribute to the expansion of Philadelphia’s ever-growing Gluten-Free Neighborhood – the first recognized gluten-free, celiac-friendly city in the United States. 

“Appetite for Awareness is rolling down the river,” said NFCA founder and president Alice Bast. “In an exciting new venue, we’re ready to raise awareness of an age old disease. Our goal is to help to bring a celiac diagnosis to 1 million Americans in the next 5 years.”

Appetite for Awareness 2010 the will take place from 2-6 p.m., with the Gluten-Free Cooking Spree, Vendor Marketplace and Children’s Pavilion open through the duration of that time frame.

Tickets purchased in advance receive a discounted rate of $50 for Adults, $25 for Students with ID and $20 for Children (under 12). Admission fees at the door are $75 for Adults, $35 for Students with ID and $25 for Children (under 12). Discount family package pricing in also available. About Celiac Disease:

Celiac Disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. Celiac is triggered by consumption of the protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. An estimated three million Americans have celiac disease, yet 95% remain undiagnosed – resulting in a fourfold increase in the risk of early death and numerous debilitating conditions such as infertility, neuropathy and even cancer.
