Celiac Disease and Play-Doh

Question:

My 2 year old has celiac. Should we allow her to continue to play with Play-Doh? She loves the stuff!

From,
Dawn

Answer:

Hi Dawn,

Play-Doh does contain gluten and should be avoided if there is any risk that your daughter will eat it or if her hands come in contact with her mouth while she is handling it. A safer alternative would be to purchase gluten-free playdough or make your own. There are several great gluten-free playdough recipes online, such as this one from Parents.com.

Sincerely,

The Center for Celiac Disease at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
